MEET KATHRIN KIDGER: Vodacom Durban July Fashion Preview Alumni

The Gateway Vodacom Durban July Preview Fashion Show and Concert is a highlight on Kathrin’s fashion calendar. | Report by Lwazi Hadebe

Within a diverse South African context Kathrin Kidger is a designer who is celebrated for unique garments that women can relate to. She is inspired by her great-grandmother who was a British milliner and her grandmother who was a seamstress for major fashion houses in London, which is further testament that her talent is woven in the fabric of the family line.

In 2003 Kathrin was voted Student of the Year as Durban University of Technology and most likely individual to succeed in the fashion industry. In 2016 she was further voted Durban Fashion Fair (DFF) Designer of the year; this kind of recognition propelled her to have an incredible career that has lasted for a decade and a half, with her mother and sister, who she worked with in growing the brand Kathrin Kidger.

As the countdown to the Vodacom Durban July continues Kathrin appreciates the ambience and fanfare in Durban around the Vodacom Durban July. The city comes to life as this heritage event takes centre stage, just like Jacqueline Follet who was at the Fashion benefit in Devil wears Prada, The Gateway Vodacom Durban July Preview Fashion Show and Concert is a highlight on Kathrin’s fashion calendar, it’s easy to say  “she planned her whole year around it!”

Kathrin has been involved with the platform since her days as a student at DUT, and for the last 13 years as an invited Designer. She is vocal about how it is a wonderful platform to showcase fashion, past, present and future and this year her collection is all about showcasing where she is. Asking imperative questions, such as where her consumer is, Kathrin has not taken the theme of “It is time” too literally, but rather used it as an inspiration for her collection.

At a time where responsible fashion is a pertinent movement, Kathrin considers time when creating and constructing her garments, which are made ethically with a careful consideration for design, style, fabric and the consumer. Her collection for the Gateway Vodacom Durban July Preview Fashion Show and Concert is something more considered and coming back to existing fabrics, she also paid homage to the old-world concepts of executing garments with a neutral palette, glamorous silhouettes and a freshness to her execution.
