Hi, what are you looking for?

Meet ENAMEL, a young and upcoming South African based, Nigerian Afro Pop artist.

It’s safe to say that Enamel, real name Hakim Giwa, has claimed his spot as one of Africa’s Afropop newcomers to look out for. He’s recently released a new single called “GANG”, which follows his successful debut single “Pokish”; we caught up with the new kid on the block about life, music and his future plans.

  1. Who is Enamel, and where are you from?

Enamel is a 24-year old self driven, ambitious and optimistic young black African man from a city called Ibadan in Oyo State, Nigeria. I actually got my stage name “Enamel” from my brothers when I was younger, I’m lucky to have five older brothers LOL… they’re always looking out for me.

  1. When did you move to South Africa? And why South Africa?

I came to South Africa on vacation in 2014 and fell in love with the country, I since started working for my brother who owned a business here and I’ve never looked back.

  1. Who is your biggest inspiration?

To be honest, I am my own biggest inspiration… I believe that it’s in my story, where I come from and what I’ve been through. When I look back and realise how far I’ve come, I get inspired to do better. But of course like everybody else, there are people around me that I look up to and learn from but ultimately I draw inspiration from myself.

  1. Tell us about your sound, where do you draw the inspiration to keep the beat going?

I would describe my sound as Afro – diversity, because it’s a fusion of different sounds, styles, genres and tunes BUT with Afro being the foundation of it all.  I also like to explore different sounds like Hip-Hop/TrapTrap and have been listening to Amapiano and Kwaito lately, I would like to incorporate those sounds into my music in the near future.

  1. How long have you been making music?

I’ve been making music since high school, about 10 years now and still going strong.

  1. Which South Africa artists would you like to collaborate with and why?

Definitely Sho Madjozi, Nasty C, A Reece, DJ Maphorisa/Scorpion Kings, DJ Tira, Busiswa (There’s something that I love about her, her delivery and energy is something else, LOL) Distruction Boyz and of course Frank casino, I have to get the block hot with my bro.

  1. Your latest single GANG… what’s it all about?

GANG is about appreciating those that are there for you during the good and the bad times, people that you rely on. A gang isn’t about violence in this case; it’s about appreciating the people that you regard as family.

  1. What are your thoughts about the current African musical landscape?

It can only get better! I feel like our best is yet to come, we all have to make use of what we know how to do best in showcasing African talent at its best. In my point of view, I feel like the world is still sleeping on Africa but I also have to mention that to a good extent, we’re getting the recognition that we deserve and won’t stop until it gets better.

  1. What is the one thing that no one else knows about you?

I’m also an entrepreneur that manufactures hair products for ladies. My hair line is called Likha.

  1. What can we expect from you in 2020?

More and more music! Watch the space.
