It’s that time of the year where the Superbowl of fashion events takes place and as always, Hollywoods’ heavyweights will be on the red carpet in the most luxurious and over the top garments. The Met Gala is the Costume Institute Gala at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, its an annual fundraiser to benefit the museum’s collection of over 30,000 fashion, costumes and accessories that spans five continents and seven centuries. The event always takes place on the first Monday in May, which means next week this time, fashion critics all over the world will be anxious to know who will be wearing what on the red carpet.
Donatella Versace, Anna Wintour and cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Vatican Pontifical Council for Culture.
American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has chaired the event over the years, ensuring a close relationship between the magazine and the Museum. This year the exhibit will, however, be co-chaired by the Met Ball’s favourite fashion star Rihanna, Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney.
The theme is Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. The purpose of the theme is “to create a dialogue between fashion and the masterworks of religious art” according to Laird Borrelli-Persson, including the popes house dress from the Sistine Chapel sacristy, many of which have never been seen outside the Vatican will also be on display.
