Influencer and DJ Thee Buhle—real name Lundi Buhle Gugwana—always knew she was meant for the spotlight. Energetic and a natural performer from a young age, she initially dreamed of becoming an actress. However, like many parents, hers didn’t consider it a real career path, leading her to pursue studies in engineering instead. But fate had other plans—what’s meant for you always finds its way.

Growing up, Buhle always loved dancing, so when she moved to Johannesburg from the Vaal for her tertiary education, she was encouraged to mix MC’ing with her dancing. Her first gigs were at University of Johannesburg social events. The charismatic Thee Buhle admits she’s actually quite shy in person, but her chosen career pushes her out of her comfort zone. From those humble beginnings, she’s now carving out a space of her own, from building a successful DJ career to co-starring in the reality TV show MTV’s Inside Life—City Girls Are Up.
With so much achieved in just three years, the 25-year-old’s star is only getting brighter. Here are a few of her favourite things that reflect who she is.

Sleeping
With a career that demands constant travel and late nights, sleep is a luxury. But for me, it’s more than just rest—it’s peace. I sleep when I’m stressed because I know I’ll wake up refreshed. I sleep when I have nothing to do. Simply put, if there’s a chance to nap, I’m taking it. My love for sleep has been there since childhood. My mum used to complain about how much I slept and even once thought I was pregnant because of it. But truly, sleeping brings me peace, and I choose that peace for myself.
Cooking
I grew up in a household where my mother cooked up a storm, and takeaways were a rare treat—something we only had every few months. My curiosity led me to the kitchen, and by Grade 8, I had already mastered cooking. Now, with such a busy life, I appreciate home-cooked meals more than ever.
Food
Food makes me happy! I used to eat as much as I wanted without worrying about weight gain, but now I have to be a little more cautious—my metabolism is no longer ‘making sure’. I absolutely love African cuisine, and my favourite dish is dumpling with mogodu.
Spending Time with My Family
My family consists of both my parents and four other siblings—I’m the fifth and last-born. Growing up in the Vaal, we lived on old farm plots with very spaced-out houses, so my siblings became my best friends. That experience instilled in me the importance of family. Now, it’s hard to find time because I’m always busy, but whenever I get a chance, I spend it with them. They ground me and remind me what truly matters.
Shoes—Sneakers and Heels, Specifically
I used to love sneakers and hated heels while growing up. But once I got into modelling and pageantry, I developed a taste for heels—now, I even have my preferences!
Clothes
As much as I love fashion, the industry we’re in doesn’t allow for ‘pap’ outfits. You have to always look cool, keep up with trends, and ensure your image aligns with your brand. This has only heightened my love for dressing well.
Going Out with My Friends for Girly Dates
Growing up, most of my friends were guys, so I was often mistaken for a tomboy. And let’s be real—guys don’t plan cute outings like picnics or movies; they just want to braai meat and chill. That’s why I love my girl friends so much. With them, I get to dress up, look cute, and go on those soul-refilling girly dates. Deep down, I’m a girly girl!
Travelling
I love seeing new places, experiencing different cultures, and learning about heritage. I also feel blessed that my career allows me to travel internationally. My passport definitely needs a few more stamps!
My Own Quality Time
It’s important to detach from all the noise around us. Sometimes, we’re surrounded by things that don’t align with who we are. So, I make time to be alone, reflect, and realign myself with my values. This also gives me time to connect with God, which can be hard when always on the move.
Perfume
I love smelling good—and let’s be honest, the compliments that come with it are a lovely bonus. My absolute favourite perfume right now is Dolce & Gabbana: The One and Only. It’s seductive, feminine, and fits my personality perfectly. I generally love perfumes that balance between spicy and sweet notes.
