Singer/songwriter Zoë Modiga is a musical storyteller. Her curiosity, keen observation of life, and ability to immerse herself in diverse experiences have made her profoundly relatable through song. Her musical projects, Yellow: The Novel, INGANEKWANE, and Nomthandazo, have boldly solidified her stance in music as an artist that keeps the pulse of conversations about life happenings, thus producing gifts that keep on giving.

The star, with depth of music under her belt, has always been one to look for meaning in life, from a tender age, but beyond the music, Zoe has varying nuances that have made life a little more colourful and meaningful to her.

These are Zoe Modiga’s favourite things.

The colour yellow – Yes, you guessed that right!

Yellow is my favorite color and has been since my childhood days. It started with a yellow crayon. We had a song called “yellow washa,” and I’d sing it while coloring the sun. I was never a pink or blue girl, and I think this color has been my way of life. Rejecting the law and binary of things and always choosing the unchosen pathways in many things has always felt truest to me.

Durban, Capetown, Harlem, Lagos, and Amsterdam

Amsterdam | PINTEREST

I love Durban because it is my city of birth, and I’m a coastal girl at heart.

Cape Town is where I found many parts of myself, and I’ll always be grateful for that.

Harlem has so much soul; I’ve met a lot of fellow Africans, and the African diaspora there is a melting pot of everything I like.

Lagos is fast, flavorful, filled with character, and gives me a feeling of home.

Amsterdam is special to me; it is where I would live if I lived in Europe.

I love big cars, namely Jeep Wranglers and Range Rover Sports. Both my parents drove big cars growing up. It feels nostalgic and reminds me of all the traveling we did. It’s fun; I like it.

Fashion

I love fashion and admire designers such as Nao Serati, Thebe Magugu, Rich Mnisi, Neimil, Wanda Lephoto, Uniformza, and Lukhanyo Mdingi.

Fashion in South Africa is telling our stories in the most resonant, potent, and powerful way. I admire all these geniuses and am almost completely baffled. I grew up with some of them.

Books

Quiet Violence of Dream by Sello K. Duiker, and The Women Who Run With Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés.

These books have changed my life and my perspective on everything. Every single thing. Watching movies is also a favorite pastime of mine. Cinematography, storytelling, all-encompassing, visceral, out-of-this-world work—it reminds me of the kind of work I wish to make as a creative person.

Comedy

I love comedy, and I love comedians such as Dave Chappell and Pharoahfi. Witty human commentary at its best; they are true observers of life and people. One thing that people might not know about me is that I have a dark sense of humor, am sensitive, and am a little quirky.

Favourite apps: Youtube, Pinterest

Sourced Online

I love knowing more about how people think, and YouTube allows for that. Pinterest has great themes for pretty much everything.

Destressors

In this very fast-paced life of ours, I love activities that calm me down, like going to the gym, swimming, horseback riding, watching solo movies at the cinema, and watching interviews.
9. Family memory: These are created every time I visit my living grandmother (who raised her). She’s everything to me. I am a full human being whose life has poured into my own. I also love home-cooked meals—not by me (LOL). I don’t like my own cooking, but I feel loved by someone else’s cooking.
