The 20th celebration of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival

an exciting new initiative that will be launched at this year’s edition of ‘Africa’s Grandest Gathering’, the 20th celebration of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF), which takes place on 29 and 30 March at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Extending beyond its musical stages, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) will promote Khayelitsha as a tourist destination.

The CTIJF is an annual festival on Cape Town’s calendar and has been recognised for its contribution to growing the local economy. Its organiser espAfrika has always explored new avenues to create jobs for locals while maintaining a top-notch quality event.

The CTIJF has set up a tourism hub at the Cape Town International Convention Centre where the magic is set to unfold on 29 and 30 March 2019. The aim is to promote local township tourism, create jobs and encourage awareness about a perhaps under-explored tourism option for visitors.

Jazz festival director Billy Domingo says they want to feature other townships at the tourism hub in future.

“It’s an exciting new development for us, and one we look forward to for years to come. The CTIJF is a prime environment for our festival-goer to discover new sounds, but it is also the perfect place for them to be exposed to new places and experiences,” says Domingo.

“For our communities, it’s an opportunity to connect with a market they would not otherwise benefit from. It’s an opportunity we are delighted to provide.”

This year’s exhibitors from Khayelitsha are ABCD Concepts Tours, Lungi’s Bed and Breakfast, Malebo’s Bed and Breakfast and the ever-popular social hotspot Rands CPT. All exhibitors will be taking bookings at the festival and beforehand via our website.

Visitors can experience a comfortable stayover at Malebo’s Bed and Breakfast, which exudes sincere hospitality and down-to-earth vibes of local Xhosa culture. Malebo’s is locally owned and has been hosting both local and international travellers for more than 16 years. It has five comfortable rooms and specialises in traditional Xhosa cuisine and culture. Its customised accommodation packages include meals, entertainment and a range of local experiences.

Lungi’s Bed and Breakfast, located in a traditional house, offers a real Khayelitsha experience from the inside. Guests can immerse themselves in the local community and culture and be fascinated and entertained by people’s stories, while enjoying the convenient location of Lungi’s. It also offers insight into the neighbourhood’s creativity and entrepreneurship activities, as guests are greeted with warm and welcoming smiles.

Day-trippers are best advised to get in contact with ABCD Concepts Tours, which offers clients an authentic experience, with tours guided by locals who live in the community. Tours can be tailored for individuals, couples, students, families and friends, and groups wishing to explore the beautiful local community. Its tours include insight into food, history, lifestyle and partying in Khayelitsha.
