Get your tailor on the line and mark your calendar because in November 2018, the much anticipated annual South African Style Awards are on and as you’ve come to expect, it will be an evening of sumptuous style and high-level glamour so blatant, it may even seem imagined. With a-listers such as Terry Pheto and Basetsana Khumalo selected to be one of judges, this years ceremony promises to be more than a celebration of fashion, but a spectacular showcase of style.
Every year, the sponsors and judges unite in the search for South Africa’s most stylish people. The judges are handpicked from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and are asked to nominate two people whom they believe to be outstandingly stylish in nine different categories – the wild, the wonderful, the fantastic, the faces plus tomorrow’s and last years trendsetters. This years sponsors include Alfa Romeo, Skins Cosmetics, GlamPalm and Tsogo Sun.
Award winning writer and journalist Lesley Mofokeng, one of the selected judges for the evening, states that he’s looking for “someone that has a style identity. Someone who interprets trends to make them their own – a trail blazer in their own right. This person must understand the African aesthetic enough to recognise and celebrate their own heritage and give it the space and the respect it deserves” he added. Other judges also include fashion stylist Louw Kotze and renowned creative talent manager, Jodie Ennik just to name a few.
“Someone who’s very stylish, obviously.” Terry Pheto giggles as she spills on what she’s looking for in the nominees. Draped in Marianne Fassler and looking every bit as what the ceremony is about. She added “Style has to come organically and effortlessly in such a way that even when camera’s are not focused on them, they still look stunning. While others are born with it, most put in the hard work to achieve it and we have to acknowledge the people that put in the effort.”
Past winners include Bonang Matheba, Lindiwe Suttle, Carolyn Steyn, Gisèle Wertheim Aymés, Nomzamo Mbatha, Terry Pheto, Jeannie D, Elana Afrika, Tamara Dey, Nina Milner, Gavin Rajah, Luthando “Lootlove” Sosha, Ayanda Thabethe, Thembisa Mdoda as well as Solo and Dineo Moeketsi.
